Pulmonary Embolus rears its ugly head again!

This is a neat little post by Andy Neill which succinctly explores a recent publication on the idea that we are most likely overdiagnosing PE. It has a pleasing simplicity. Definitely worth a look in light of ongoing online and workplace debate on this issue.

PE is the archetypal diagnosis which highlights this potential problem, and almost certainly represents only the tip of an iceberg of misunderstanding of and over-reliance on technology, testing and the associated fear-mongering.

This type of perpetuation of fear about specific pathologies is maintained by a complex web of influences from physician and public ignorance through to big-pharma and medical technology industry machinations and medicolegal pressures. We (the physicians) are the only group who can truly change it, and I think we owe it to our patients and our profession to do so.
