I am deeply disgusted and appalled by the images of ridiculous celebrations in the US over Bin Laden’s death. Surely this was an opportunity to show a mature and dignified response? In carrying on like this, the American public demonstrate that their administration has no business posturing as the moral guardian of the world, and in fact, they sink as low as those who perpetrated the horror of September 11th in the first place. It saddens me deeply in terms of what it says about the human race.
It is not that I think the world could do without Bin Laden – of course it could. However, terrorism takes many forms, and for me there is a form of terror in the triumphalism of Geraldo Rivera’s incitement to hatred from Ground Zero. Where is the dignity and respect for those who died? Have we learned nothing in the West? I deeply fear that the death of Bin Laden will make the world a less safe place. A martyr has been created, and there are undoubtedly those who will be moved to greater hatred of the West when Al Jazeera selectively broadcasts and interprets these images from the US.
God, Allah, or whoever you believe in, help us all.
