No fairytale homecoming for Marty Clarke then, and a disappointing slump from a dominant first half to a narrow one point loss. Cork stepped up their effort after a stunned and turgid first half, and just managed to hold off a late Down flurry. The key for them was their superior midfield catching (Ambrose Rogers was sorely missed by Down there!) and they also managed to keep Clarke very quiet. Benny Coulter also had a disappointing game for us. Cork will be relieved more than anything. I have one question, why did James McCartan take off the feisty Dundrum man McComiskey when he did? I can’t help but feel that that was a mistake…oh well, there is always next year…but will Marty be around, or will the dollars and the weather draw him back to Melbourne? His old side the Collingwood Magpies play St Kilda in the AFL Grand Final next weekend.
